Military Adoption
Benefits
Assistance is available to
military personnel and their
families who are considering
an adoption.
Military personnel on active
duty are eligible to
apply for and receive
reimbursement of expenses
and costs incurred in
an adoption proceeding.
Specifically, active duty
soldiers can receive up to
$2,000 in
assistance/reimbursement
where a single child is
adopted and up to $5,000
where more than one
child is adopted in a
calendar year. To
receive the financial
benefit the adoption
must proceed through a
non-profit agency meaning
that it can not be handled
by a private for-profit
adoption agency.
The benefits are not paid
until the adoption is
finalized through a judicial
proceeding. The steps set
forth in the summary
provided on this site for
"Military Adoptions" still
must be completed to
finalize the adoption.
Although not all costs and
expenses qualify for
reimbursement and the total
reimbursement can not exceed
the dollar caps addressed
above, expenses and costs
that generally can be
reimbursed include
legal/attorney fees, court
costs, placement fees, the
agency fees, the home study
analysis, and certain
medical expenses.
